Cathedral of the Transfiguration
The Slovak Cathedral of the Transfiguration was conceptualized, funded and realized by Stephen Boleslav Roman. Construction on the Cathedral, designed by Donald Buttress, began in 1984 and, in that same year, Pope John Paul II consecrated its cornerstone during his visit to Canada. The architecture is styled after a Czechoslovakian church that existed in Roman's childhood village.

Our studio was commissioned to design and install a mosaic on the interior of the dome. The mosaic measures 45' in diameter and features the icon of Christ Pantocrator surrounded by a blue ornament invoking heaven. The background of the icon features a mixture of gold smalti, developed specifically for this mosaic. Our studio was further commissioned to assist in the restoration and preservation of exterior mosaics in the Cathedral.
